Story Synopsis:
Based on historical facts of the legendary United States Army General, Custer Of The West stars Robert Shaw as the war hero who met his fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn. After his service in the Civil War, General Custer is sent West to take over the Seventh Cavalry and is ordered to drive an Indian tribe off of their own reservation due to the discovery of gold on their land. The movie attempts to reveal the motivations of General Custer for his actions and his thoughts as he rode to his doom.
DVD Picture:
This 2.20:1 DVD picture (mislabeled as 1.85:1), like the previously released DVD (reviewed in Issue 35), is not anamorphically enhanced, and exhibits dated characteristics. While sharpness is adequate, finer details are often lacking. The color palette is often nicely saturated, with rich, bold reds and blues, nicely rendered fleshtones, and deep, but undefined blacks. Some scenes look better than others regarding overall sharpness and color balance, as there are a few sequences that exhibit weak saturation. While obtrusive halos are not a problem with this title, some objects appear slightly edgy at times. Pixel breakup and smearing are occasionally detected. (Suzanne Hodges)
