Story Synopsis:
In February 2002, fifty-three thousand Afghan refugees lived in the Shamshatoo Refugee Camp in Pakistan. The first arrived in 1979; the most recent came to escape the U.S. led bombing campaign, which began on October 7, 2001. "In This World," winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, tells the story of young Jamal (Torabi) and his companion Enayat (Enayatullah) as they make their way on a dangerous journey from Pakistan to London. The boys encounter many obstacles and horrors along the way but stay determined in their quest of a better life than the one they left behind. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD picture exhibits DV-originated images with a limited color scheme, boasting lots of warm golds and deep, but undefined blacks. Some scenes are virtually monochromatic and others weakly saturated. There are many scenes which are creatively photographed, adding interest to the subject matter. Images can be generally sharp, but fine details and definition are often wanting. Shimmering details and noise is occasionally detected, but there are rarely any instances of annoying edge halos. Considering the source element, the picture is generally satisfying. (Suzanne Hodges)
