Story Synopsis:
When Alex Rose (Stiller) and his wife, Nancy Kendricks (Barrymore), decide to purchase an enchanting older Duplex in the Bronx, they expect that the elderly upstairs tenant, Mrs. Connelly (Essell), will be kicking the proverbial bucket at any second. But after the couple moves in, they discover that Mrs. Connelly watches TV all night at an awakening volume, asks for favors and errands all day, and is literally the upstairs neighbor-from-hell. When both Alex and Nancy lose their jobs due to their pesky neighbor, they have no choice but to make attempts (several attempts) to help Mrs. Connelly on her way to the pearly gates. Directed by Danny DeVito, one can definitely see similarities to his other dark comedy "The War Of The Roses" (even in the last name of Stiller
DVD Picture:
Colors are rich and nicely saturated on this anamorphically enhanced DVD picture, which is framed at 1.85:1. Images are nicely detailed with natural textures, pleasing contrast, and shadow delineation. Inside the duplex, the settings are dimly lit, but the visual information is quite satisfying when viewed in a completely blackened room. There are some instances in which bothersome edge enhancement is noticed, but pixelization is not a problem. (Suzannne Hodges)Disc Two includes a modified 1.33:1 (4:3) full screen version of the movie -- not reviewed.
