Special features include audio commentary by director Robert Wise, screenwriter Nelson Gidding, and actors Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, and Russ Tamblyn; a still gallery, on-screen notes regarding things that go bump in the night, and a waste-of-time cast and crew selection.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a black-and-white picture that requires viewing in a completely blackened room to compensate for the extremely dark scenes within the movie. The brighter scenes exhibit a pleasing gray scale, with satisfying contrast between the soft whites and deep blacks. The picture can be nicely detailed, though some scenes appear quite soft or slightly hazy. There are flecks of dirt, artifacts, some film grain, and occasional scratches inherent in the source element. Minor distractions come in the way of pixelization, which can break up finer details at times, and occasional edge enhancement. With our DVD, there were some playback problems noticed in Chapter 10, where the image paused slightly or partially broke apart. (Suzanne Hodges)
