  WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Get off my sub! Based on true events, "K-19: The Widowmaker" follows the heroism of Captain Alexi Vostrikov (Ford) who, at the height of the Cold War, is ordered to take command of the nuclear missile submarine K-19, away from its original commander, Captain Mikhail Polenin (Neeson). Vostrikov

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture opens with a cold gray atmosphere that sets the pace for the Cold War storytelling. As would be expected, the interiors of the sub are dim, but shadow delineation and contrast are nicely balanced for these scenes. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, though some of the darker images (like the dark uniforms on a cluster of soldiers) lack texture and definition. A few artifacts and minor film grain are inherent in the source element. Edge enhancement can be a problem with this title and is not only reserved for high-contrast scenes. (Suzanne Hodges)
