DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD offers a nicely restored picture from a 35mm interpositive and the transfer was co-supervised by cinematographer Raoul Coutard. The picture looks great and, thanks to the restoration, shows little sign of its age. Colors are richly saturated and nicely balanced. Images are generally sharp and detailed, with pleasing contrast and shadow delineation. There is an ugly shift from day to night during a car ride in Chapter 7, but it is inherent in the source element. Film grain, minor dirt, and scratches are also revealed from the source element, though quite a bit of debris his been removed from the picture. Edge enhancement is a bit of a problem. On a side note: watch the glass door in Chapter 6 to see reflections of members of the film crew. (Suzanne Hodges)
