Brothers Farrelly To Direct Three Stooges For MGM

By Stacey Pendry

After five years of trying unsuccessfully to get a contemporary comedy featuring the slapstick humor of the original Stooges off the ground at Warner Bros., the Farrelly Brothers have jumped ship to MGM to polish the script for their upcoming comedy.

After MGM Chairman Mary Parent acquired the rights to the Farrelly's script owned by Warner Bros., she quickly shored up the deal with the Stooges right's holders at C3 Entertainment. Parent and the Farrellys plan to make a $45 million comedy that will take place in present day, with the actors who look, dress, and speak like the original Stooges. An "American Idol"-type contest will be held to cast the lead role of "Curly," the most physically demanding role of the trio, with a second contest being held to find several comedy shorts that will run at the beginning of the feature film.

MGM has staked a November 20, 2009 release date for the film, which will pit it against the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr., which is set to premier the same weekend. The following weekend will see The Three Stooges against Disney's comedy
Old Dogs starring John Travolta.
